Blog Reviews

Personally I have never been a 'blogosphere addict', however upon further exploration I have managed to find some that I really enjoy. I have noticed the many different approaches people take in expressing their musings, but also the many similarities.

A really popular format is collage, whereby the page consists of a gathering of pictures that have inspired the creator. Good examples of this are Sleeping in LipstickBlackbirdI Like Being Different and The Fashionable Life.

I really enjoy this format because the creator has obviously chosen these pictures for a reason. It captures and emulates their personality and style in one collection of images. The edgy feel is so interesting, as is how the blogs do not concentrate solely on fashion but everything that contributes to it. A downside, however, is the difficulty in tracing the pictures back to their original location. When I see a picture I love, I immediately want to know everything about it. Especially when clothes are involved! Overall a collage format, while lacking immediate information, is a perfect platform for communicating personal fascinations.

Contrastingly, RubyBlog is a more business-oriented blog celebrating and promoting the NZ Ruby Label and local fashion events.  A strong downside for me is the way it is only effective for their immediate customer base. The viewer does not benefit from as much variety that features in collage blogs. Having said this, I really like this set-up because it provides all information about the clothes, keeps consumers up-to-date and moreover, points followers in the direction of other fashion blogs they may enjoy.

A blog that I believe has a perfect balance of information and creative flair is Flip and Style. Where Vanessa provides amazing photography and photos of celebrities wearing beautiful clothes, she also showcases collections of garments in similar styles listing their label/origin. She makes brief comments after each collection of photos; a personal connection to her followers. Not only does this blog showcase pictures Vanessa likes, she explores current trends, photoshoots, models, style icons, inspirations and collections. I relate the best to Flip and Style because I love the photos and also benefit from the information.

Finally, two other blogs I enjoy are The Sartorialist and Tuula. The Sartorialist is very unique, as it focuses on people on the street that capture the attention of Scott Schumann. He celebrates the role fashion plays in everyday life, whilst discreetly conveying his personal style through his selections. Where information regarding the clothes lacks, he includes inspirational quotes that emulate the feelings within the pictures that I really enjoy reading. I believe the simplicity of appreciating/being inspired by the choices of others is very fresh.

Tuula is a young visionary who documents outfits that she loves. The blog is a self-proclaimed 'personal diary of wonderlast and an overflowing wardrobe' (Tuula). Unlike collage blogs that are commonly 're-blogged' photos from another source, all Tuula's content is her own. She provides a serious of photos in an outfit, followed by details of the clothing and a personal comment. I believe this simplistic style is very effective - the photography is very creative, edgy and appealing, her comments allow her audience to engage personally and the details of the clothes are an added bonus for those who love them enough to chase.

Taken as a whole, blogs are simply a platform for personal expression. None are right or wrong, some just suit certain people more than others. I enjoy knowing where to source the clothes I see, where others may prefer just the inspiring photography.
